No speeding problem here

Thanks to the efforts of my local councillor, Bally Singh, the council have undertaken a speed check on Craven St.

Unfortunately, whilst their response doesn’t surprise me, it does show that their definition of “no speeding problem” is very different to the one that others might use. It also shows that a street where 29 offences per day might be recorded simply doesn’t have “enough” of a problem.

Naturally, it is well known that these measures are really based on a calculation of “how many people will die”, hence, a street like this doesn’t get up to the top of the tree. Sadly, the problem is not so much how many people will get killed on any one street (that is always going to be small on a standalone basis), but simply how many people never feel safe enough to walk or cycle in the first place.

Unfortunately, the results of this are all to easy to see.

The survey showed that the average weekday produced:-

Average speed 85% ile speed Daily flow Justifying Police speed enforcement using ACPO guidance
Northbound 21.7 mph 27.8 mph 459 vehicles 3 per day
Southbound 24.1 mph 30.3 mph 571 vehicles 26 per day

It should be noted that the speeds and volumes at weekends were lower than these figures.

The survey was located just south of Lord Street.

The information indicates that there is currently no speeding problem requiring speed enforcement by the Police as there is good conformity with the speed limit.  The speeds are also slightly high for a 20 mph speed limit such that if one is to be introduced in the road, as part of the 20 mph initiative, some traffic calming measures will be required to ensure that the speed is self-enforcing.
