Local transport network Centro (using the NWM / mynetwork brand) had an advert on my Facebook account, clearly logging that I have an interest in cycling, which is great. They are offering free training – that’s still good.
Clicking on the link shows something rather disturbing about the image they’ve used, which I have pasted below:
So why is this an issue?
Well firstly, and most obviously, it doesn’t show much self confidence when an organisation offering training is promoting cycle routes where users cycle on the right (as per anywhere on the continent). Secondly, and more importantly, it doesn’t show much confidence in their own network if they can’t find an image of people using cycling facilities within the West Midlands. Now you might say I am just being pedantic – after all, this is just an image selected by a web team, who may only have access to certain stock images. Perhaps it’s a subconscious hope of how they might like to create provision in the West Midlands, although if our experience in Coventry is anything to go by, they can forget about any sort of direction labelling, let alone separation from pedestrians.
So basically, Centro are just being sloppy and lazy – exactly as they are with their general approach to cycling provision as a whole.
